Prenatal Consultation

 Text or call: (702) 728-5686

A genital or urinary tract abnormality may be detected by prenatal ultrasound.  This can be a stressful finding for the expecting families.  Dr. Hwang offers prenatal consultation and coordination to families who are expecting a baby with such conditions.

During the consultation, Dr. Hwang goes over the prenatal ultrasound findings with the family and explains the anatomy and possible diagnoses.  The tests or procedures that the baby may need after birth are also reviewed.  Dr. Hwang will communicate with the referring obstetrician, perinatologist, and the baby’s pediatrician to assure expedient evaluation and management to minimize potential complications as a result of these abnormalities.

Many babies with a prenatally detected urologic abnormality do not require surgery.  They do need careful evaluation and follow-up to establish the diagnosis and to reduce the risk of infection or damage to the kidneys or the bladder during the child’s development.

Some of the more common in-utero conditions that may be seen on prenatal ultrasound are:

  • Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction (UPJ obstruction)
  • Vesicoureteral Reflux
  • Obstructed Megaureter (UVJ obstruction)
  • Ureterocele
  • Posterior Urethral Valves
  • Ectopic, crossed-fused, or horse-shoe kidney
  • Multi Cystic Dysplastic Kidney (MCKD)
  • Duplication Abnormalities (double kidney or ureter)
  • Bladder Exstrophy
  • Ambiguous genitalia
  • Spina bifida

Some of the imaging studies and testes the baby may need after birth include:

  • Renal ultrasound (RUS)
  • Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG)
  • Radionuclide renal scan
  • Cystoscopy, retrograde ureteropyelogram (under general anesthesia)
